The Lord of the Underworld tempts Prince Temiya in The Silent Prince (Bangkok, 2012)
PART ONE • TEMIYA • THE SILENT PRINCE
In The Silent Prince, originally commissioned by Opera Vista in Houston, Texas, in 2010
the Bodhisattva appears on earth as a young prince in the city of Kashi. Forced to
choose between the sin of disobeying his father and the sin of murder, Prince Temiya
reacts by retreating into total silence, broken only when he must save
his executioner from the bad karma of having to kill him.
Scored for a chamber ensemble and an ensemble cast, this opera
received rave reviews and sold out houses in its original incarnation.
In 2012, when repeated in Thailand, the opera received lavish praise from
many international publications.
